The first time I found a tiny puppy tooth on the floor, I thought something had gone wrong. Then my puppy started chewing chair legs like they owed him money, and I realized I was in the thick of puppy teething stages.

Most puppies move from 28 baby teeth to 42 adult teeth in just a few months. That fast change can make them drool, nip, chew, whine, and turn your furniture into a personal dental project. The good news is that the timeline is predictable, and the right plan makes this stage easier for both of you.

Puppy Teething Stages: Quick Timeline Table

Veterinary sources generally agree that puppies start teething around 3 weeks, have 28 baby teeth by about 6 to 8 weeks, and later develop 42 adult teeth. Adult teeth often finish erupting around 6 months, though some puppies may take closer to 7 or 8 months.

What Happens During Puppy Teething?

Puppy teething is not just “cute chewing.” It is a real dental transition. Baby teeth loosen, adult teeth push through the gums, and pressure builds in the mouth.

Baby Teeth Come First

Puppies are born without teeth. Around 2 to 4 weeks, their first baby teeth start coming through. These teeth are small, sharp, and temporary.

By around 6 to 8 weeks, most puppies have 28 baby teeth. These include incisors, canines, and premolars. Dogs do not have baby molars, which is why molars only appear later as permanent adult teeth.

Adult Teeth Replace Them Fast

Around 12 weeks, baby teeth begin to fall out. Permanent teeth then move into place. You may find a tiny white tooth near the food bowl, on a blanket, or stuck in a toy.

Do not panic if you never find any. Puppies often swallow baby teeth while eating or chewing, and that is usually harmless.

Puppy Teething Stages by Age

The easiest way to manage puppy teething stages is to know what is normal at each age. I use the timeline below to match care with the puppy’s discomfort level.

Birth to 2 Weeks: No Teeth Yet

Newborn puppies are toothless. They depend on their mother’s milk and do not need chew toys yet.

At this point, oral care is a simple observation. If a breeder or caregiver notices swelling, poor nursing, or obvious mouth discomfort, a vet should check the puppy.

2 to 8 Weeks: Baby Teeth Arrive

This is when the mouth changes quickly. Incisors and canines usually appear first, followed by premolars.

These baby teeth are sharp. If you have ever felt puppy “needle teeth” during play, this is the stage. The puppy is not being mean. They are learning bite control while their mouth develops.

Soft toys work well here. I avoid hard chews because baby teeth are fragile.

12 to 16 Weeks: Baby Teeth Start Falling Out

This stage often surprises new owners. Puppies may drool more, chew more, and leave tiny spots of blood on toys.

Mild bleeding during tooth loss can be normal. Heavy bleeding, facial swelling, or refusal to eat is not something I ignore.

This is also when I start handling the mouth gently every day. I lift the lips, touch the gums for a second, then reward calm behavior. That small habit makes future brushing and vet exams much easier.

4 to 6 Months: Peak Chewing Begins

This is the dramatic stage. Adult incisors, canines, and premolars push through the gums. The chewing can feel nonstop.

The ASPCA notes that puppy chewing is driven by both exploration and teething discomfort, and the intense chewing phase often eases by around 6 months. Frozen chew toys or frozen wet washcloths may help numb sore gums.

This is when I become strict about management. I do not wait for the puppy to “grow out of it” while destroying furniture. I set up safe zones, rotate toys, and redirect every bad chew choice.

6 to 8 Months: Adult Teeth Finish Coming In

By this stage, most puppies have their full adult set. Adult dogs have 42 permanent teeth.

Chewing may not disappear overnight. Some dogs chew because they are bored, anxious, or under-exercised. Still, the frantic gum-pressure chewing should begin to calm down.

Common Puppy Teething Symptoms I Watch For

Most puppy teething signs are easy to spot once you know the pattern. The biggest sign is chewing. Puppies chew shoes, blankets, chair legs, baseboards, fingers, and anything that fits in their mouth.

I also watch for swollen gums, mild bleeding, extra drool, temporary bad breath, and fussiness. Some puppies hesitate before eating hard kibble because their gums feel tender.

A slight appetite dip can happen, but a puppy should still eat. If a puppy refuses food, cries while chewing, paws at the mouth, or has strong swelling, I treat that as a vet-check situation.

Best Toys for Teething Puppies: What Actually Helps

The best toys for teething puppies are soft enough for baby teeth but durable enough to handle repeated chewing. I look for flexible rubber, puppy-safe freezable fabric, and treat-stuffable toys.

Kong Puppy-style rubber toys work well because they are softer than many adult chew toys. Freezable teething toys can also help because cold reduces gum discomfort. Treat-dispensing toys keep a puppy busy longer, which helps protect your furniture.

My Thumbnail Test for Safe Chews

Here is my simple original rule: if I cannot slightly dent a chew with my thumbnail, I do not give it to a teething puppy.

That means I avoid real bones, antlers, hooves, and very hard nylon toys during teething. They may seem long-lasting, but that hardness can be risky for developing teeth.

This test is not a replacement for veterinary advice, but it has saved me from buying toys that feel more like tools than puppy chews.

Freezable Toys Work Better for Sore Gums

Cold toys often work better than room-temperature toys. I like stuffing a soft rubber toy with soaked kibble, plain pumpkin, or puppy-safe wet food, then freezing it.

A frozen washcloth can also help, but I only use it under supervision. Puppies can shred fabric, and swallowed pieces can create problems.

Puppy Chewing Furniture Solutions That Work

The best puppy chewing furniture solutions combine prevention, redirection, and enrichment. Punishment does not solve sore gums. It usually makes the puppy confused or sneaky.

Block Access Before Training

I do not give a teething puppy full access to the house. That is asking too much.

I use baby gates, exercise pens, closed doors, and leash supervision indoors. If the puppy cannot reach the table leg, the puppy cannot practice chewing it.

Bitter anti-chew sprays can help on furniture edges. I reapply them daily because the taste fades. I also test the spray on a hidden spot first to avoid damaging fabric or wood finishes.

Use the Three-Second Swap Rule

When I catch a puppy chewing furniture, I interrupt calmly with a short sound like “Ah-ah.” Then I offer a legal chew within three seconds.

That fast swap matters. The puppy needs to connect the urge to chew with the correct object.

The moment the puppy bites the toy, I praise them. I do not turn it into a chase game. Chasing can make furniture chewing more exciting.

Feed the Brain, Not Just the Belly

A bored teething puppy chews harder. I use puzzle toys, frozen food toys, lick mats, and short training sessions to drain mental energy. If you use food-stuffed toys often, it also helps to learn more about homemade dog food recipes vet approved so your puppy gets safe ingredients, balanced nutrition, and teething-friendly textures.

Five minutes of “sit,” “touch,” and name-response practice can tire a puppy more than random running. Mental work also teaches the puppy to look to you for direction.

When Puppy Teething Needs a Vet Check

Most teething is normal, but some signs need professional attention.

Call your vet if you notice retained baby teeth, crooked adult teeth, severe bleeding, strong mouth odor, facial swelling, or trouble eating. VCA recommends checking a puppy’s mouth weekly until around 7 to 8 months and contacting a vet if baby teeth remain or the bite looks abnormal.

Retained baby teeth can crowd the mouth and trap food. That can lead to dental disease if ignored. Smaller breeds and flat-faced breeds may be more prone to retained teeth, so I stay extra watchful with them.

FAQs

1. What are the worst weeks for puppy teething?

The hardest period is usually between 4 and 6 months. Adult teeth are actively pushing through, so chewing often peaks during this window.

2. Do puppies swallow their baby teeth?

Yes, many puppies swallow baby teeth while eating or chewing. This is common and usually harmless. You may find some teeth, but you may not find any.

3. What can I freeze for a teething puppy?

You can freeze soft rubber puppy toys stuffed with soaked kibble, wet food, or dog-safe fillings. A frozen wet washcloth can also help under supervision.

4. Are hard bones safe for teething puppies?

I avoid hard bones, antlers, hooves, and rigid nylon chews during teething. If a chew is too hard to dent with a thumbnail, I consider it too hard for sore puppy gums.

5. How do I stop my puppy from chewing furniture?

Use barriers first, then redirect fast. Interrupt calmly, offer a safe chew toy within three seconds, and praise the puppy when they choose the toy.

6. When do puppy teething stages end?

Most puppies finish teething around 6 to 8 months. By then, they should have 42 adult teeth, though chewing habits may continue if they are bored or anxious.

Tiny Teeth, Big Drama: My Final Take

Teething can make even a sweet puppy act like a tiny woodchipper. I do not take it personally, and I do not rely on hope.

I follow the timeline, offer soft freezable toys, block furniture access, and check the mouth weekly. That simple routine gets most puppies through puppy teething stages with less pain and fewer destroyed chair legs.

Your next step is simple: pick three safe chew options, freeze one today, and set up one puppy-proof zone before the next chewing episode starts.
